I came across this article from Yachting magazine, Oct 2007. I found it illuminating (sorry, couldn’t resist the pun).
The goal is the protection of your vessel and people on-board – if you can identify the threat further out, it can serve as a deterrence or an indicator to prepare for defense of your vessel – falling in-line with the 4 ‘D’s we stress (Detection – Deterrence – Delaying – Defense).
